How Do You Sleep?
Metaphysical teacher Neville Goddard offers us this description of what takes place while we sleep: Sleep is the door through which the conscious, waking mind passes to be creatively joined to the subconscious. Sleep conceals the creative act while the objective world reveals it. In sleep man impresses the subconscious with his conception of himself.
Each night as I drift off to sleep, I adamantly refuse to use this precious time to review anything that I do not want to be reinforced in the hours of being immersed in my subconscious mind. I choose to impress upon my subconscious mind, and therefore the mind of God to which I am eternally joined, my conception of myself as a Divine creator in alignment with the one mind. I groggily reiterate my I ams, which I have placed in my imagination, and I remember that my slumber will be dominated by my last waking concept of myself. I am peaceful, I am content, I am love, I am writing, I am the governing power of the universe, and I attract only to myself those who are in alignment with my highest ideals of myself.
This is my nightly ritual, always resisting any temptation to go over any fear or unpleasantness that my ego might be asking me to review. I assume the feeling in my body of those I am statements already fulfilled, and I enter my sleep inviting the instruction that my subconscious mind welcomes. I know that I’m allowing myself to be programmed while asleep, for the next day I rise knowing that I am a free agent. I understand that every action and event of the day is essentially predetermined by my feelings as I prepared for sleep, and while I was in that place of warmth and trust in the arms of the one universal subconscious mind.
Here are some suggestions for your own bedtime routine:
— As you lie in bed preparing for your nightly slumber, remember that the last thought you have in your mind can last up to four hours in your subconscious mind. That’s four hours of programming from just one moment of contemplation prior to going into your unconscious state. Create a reminder like a prayer or mantra to place by your bed. Write these words and read them as you get comfortable: I am going to use these moments to review what I intend to manifest into my life. Keep that sign there to remind you how to spend your pre-sleep moments nightly.
— If before dropping off to sleep you are assailed by worry, distress, or fear, do not stay in bed. Get up, turn on the light, take a few deep breaths, read from a spiritual text, meditate for a few moments in front of a white candle, say a prayer — do anything other than staying there lying down. You cannot defend yourself against these onslaughts while remaining snug in your bed. If distressing feelings come back when you return to bed, get up, turn on the lights, and try something else. When you finally do feel peaceful back in bed, repeat your loving I ams and drift off to sleep ready to have your ears opened and your instructions sealed.
In Wishes Fulfilled I wrote about the importance of the last five minutes of the day, just prior to going into a long restful sleep. These precious pre-sleep moments can be utilized by either reviewing all of the things in your life which make you unhappy, frustrated and anxious, or they can be used to program your subconscious mind with thoughts of joy, kindness, gratitude and anticipation of having your wishes fulfilled.
This sign, which hangs on my bed is the very last thing that I see before I go into my sleep mode. As I lie in bed I review in my mind my appreciation for the I AM PRESENCE that is always with me. I know that good things are not only going to happen, but they are happening to me and all around me.
I remind myself every night in these portentous pre-slumber moments what is offered in the Book of Job (33: 15-16)…
“In a dream, in a vision of the night, while slumbering on their beds, then He opens the ears of men, and seals their instruction.”
For me personally, I enter my slumber with a conviction that GOOD THINGS ARE GOING TO HAPPEN. I beseech you to go into your sleep mode by using your mind to assume the feeling of your wishes being fulfilled. This is the beginning of a reprogramming of your subconscious mind

Thank you very much this article, Dr. Dyer. Ever since I purchased ‘Spirit Journeys’ by Denis Linn, I listen to at least one of her guided meditations almost every night before falling asleep. These meditations include positive affirmations which are great to hear before falling asleep. (Thank you, Denise Linn!)
This makes sense to me and I will try it tonight before dropping off to sleep and go astral surfing.
After I read this same information from “Wishes Fulfilled” this past week, I have already started sleeping better. This has already improved my attitude and my creativity. It is like getting a booster shot of life. Thank you so very much, Dr. Wayne Dyer!
I count my blessings. I sleep deeply. As a perennial student of Metaphysics since 1969, I think I may have done it all..but wait here is a year of desperation. My gratitude list still going, however, the let go and Let God part..is waning, I walked outside and screamed for help today, a petition to God.
I dreamed Deepak Chopra gave me a professional healing.I returned for more healing and observed a man, suffering from a serious foot ailment, dressed in white entering an exam room.I knew he was healed. The end of the dream. My feet are healed as to which path to take.I sleep deeply. Now I step into my days affirming opening a Maui spiritual center.
So true… I really love learning from you! Thank you for being my mentor. God bless you always!

Thank you Wayne for this reminder of how to train my subconcious mind. I write positive poetry, then read it to myself before going to sleep..I’ve been a fan of your writing since your first book, it always seems to be exactly what I need to learn.
Thank you very much for this teaching!
This was exactly what I needed. Thank you.
I sleep like a baby. No waking up with the drama my body was putting me though. I AM affirmations are at the top of my every thought from AM to PM. I know I Am healed and have the proof. I Am Healed, I Am perfect health, I Am Already Healed, I Am grateful, I Am thankful. I feel fantastic for the first time in years! 🙂

I use music to get to sleep. I learned this when I had my baby & tested in preschools, too. I have a broad selection of “softy” music, but this disc is guaranteed to deliver deep relaxation and fitfull sleep: http://www.amazon.com/Ocean-Dreams-Dean-Evenson/dp/B000QQZU4Y/ref=sr_1_5_digr?ie=UTF8&qid=1347825250&sr=8-5
It is good to practice good thoughts and feelings before we sleep.
This makes sense. It is also true that when we are at death’s door we do something similar. It is our last thoughts and feelings on earth that determine what particular part of the astral worlds we go to. It is the one overwhelming feeling or desire in this life that determines where we will go afterwards.
Thank you for the reminder. While I have been practicing this since reading your book Wishes Fullfilled, and I have noted I am more peaceful in a very frightening, insecure and trying time right now, in my life. My dreams have been quite colorful and full of lovely messages as well.
at age 66 a set of your cd’s appeared to me. Yet I had thought of “Your Erroneous Zones” since the 70’s. Grateful am I for becoming a better person at any age. Yes, sleep is normal now. I can’t learn enough. Thank you, Melody
“the last thought you have in your mind can last up to four hours in your subconscious mind.”
That sounds very interesting, but how do we know that’s true?
“As you interweave your love, thoughts, and beliefs with spirit, your life is formed. You would be wise to respect that truth in all its applications.” – Jesus speaking to Glenda Green as she paints His portrait. From her book Love Without End.
🙂 You’re an Angel!

Thank you Wayne!! A beautiful reminder for us all to consider what we are thinking before we go to sleep!! Love this!! Bless you!!
Thank you I thoroughly enjoyed reading this piece.
I have just translated the book Wishes Fulfilled in Slovenian and it’s about to be published. I am amazed by how it got to me, I love the “how to drop off to sleep part” and it’s amazing that it’s the first time I acknowledge your blog and get exactly this advice… It’s a pity we’ve just woken up in Europe 🙂
Thanks Wayne for this wonderful information. Shall try tonight! Guide us like this.
Rita
